Cabinets Up, Fixtures On
So all the cabinets are installed, lowers and uppers.
The kickass double oven is installed and working beautifully.
Jim moved the microwave into place yesterday because he needed space on the downstairs table for moving cider from first into secondary fermentation. And we pressed yet more on Saturday from our neighbor's apple tree. That's going to be a nice one!
The dishwasher is installed and plumbed, but we have been too chicken to try it out.
When I came home on Friday, I was greeted with lovely sparkly hardware on the cabinets. I totally squealed! Still waiting on a few handles— some need to be longer in order to work on the wider, heavier drawers.
But overall, it’s coming together and looking like a real kitchen!

SO. SHINY.
Did I mention they're self-closers, and that we often stand in the kitchen just opening and closing doors and drawers to watch them do their magic? And theorize about what goes where?
They’ve measured for the countertops and we hope to see those installed in a week or so. That process was pretty cool -- a fancy machine equipped with some version of AutoCAD on a tripod that looks like something from the surveying field. Took measurements of all the cabinets so the sizing of the granite will be perfect when they install it. They sent us some preview photos of what the island will look like, and though I'm making you wait to see it, I will at least tell you it's going to be gorgeous.
After that, it’ll be tile backsplash time, and then cleanup work with drywall and paint bits. There are a few tweaks too, spots where cabinet doors bonk into other door hinges or walls, solving those little problems. They say it'll be maybe a couple days' work after the countertops are in, and a flurry of activity. Wow.
The siding should get finished/fixed this coming week. They were super clever in that they borrowed some siding from the back of the fireplace to cover the window we "lost" in the old pantry. Will be interesting to see how the siding comes back together.
The waiting will be hard, but we can do lots of tidying and dusting in the meantime. I already vacuumed out the cabinets and we dusted them, make it look more real, more like home. I’m convinced the drywall dust won’t cease for 6 months...
And it’ll take us that long to figure out where to put everything. I hope to be really mindful about what comes back in and what finds a new home. It feels like we have SO much more space, and I don’t want to abuse it!

But hey, we found that our spice rack will for sure fit near the stove, in addition to many other things. And do you see the LIGHT that comes into that cabinet?! The fixture will change, but we will be able to see!
And just today, they installed the open shelving. We wanted to fancy them up a bit, so we put up a few pieces of pottery that we have thrown with MUCH assistance from Jim's dad. Okay, we didn't throw the white pot that's holding my orchid...

The drywall guy was back today to clean up some bits around doors and such, I presume in preparation for more touch-up paint. And they reinstalled trim around the door to the porch and the door to the garage, as well as baseboard trim. Not sure what else happens this week.
Oh, yeah, the proper hood will arrive. I messed up and accidentally ordered the PSLD when I really only wanted the SLD, and the hood we have in our hands now is too deep to fit in the enclosure that's been made and hung on the wall. That new hood will be here on Friday, so they can install that. Yay, a real hood! It will suck, ha! but it won't suck to have good ventilation.
Tomorrow I'm going to attempt bread baking in the new oven. I can hardly wait!
Yesterday was 9/23, and that marks a year to the day since we first saw this house. We put in an offer on 9/25 and closed in early November. And the number 23 is an auspicious one, as we celebrated our 23rd anniversary this year. Awww!
Can you say whirlwind? I'm excited for this project to continue, but also to be done, so we can relax for five minutes before the next whirlwind of the holidays. Did I mention we're hosting Thanksgiving again this year?
