Kitchen Remodel: Day One
Well. Demo day was a successful day. Much, much demolished! Most of the contents of my previous kitchen are now in pieces in my garage. Laundry appliances and my fridge are in my dining room.
Drywall dust is Everywhere, including and up to my nose. Actually, it's pretty well contained in the plastic wrap surrounding the kitchen area.
Rosie (my sweet, scared-of-many-things, Lab/Shepherd mix), however, has never been a fan of plastic anything, so she was really wary to go through the "door" in the plastic on her own. I discovered that if I could pin back the "zipper" so it didn't move, she'd go through just fine. Poor sweet dog.
Did I mention that we are also dog-sitting for sis-in-law's dogs while they're on a short vacation? So now we have four for a few days. Her dogs got a brief vacay of their own back at their own home today. Good thing we live close by.
Back to the drywall dust and general squalor, discombobulation -- my high standards of sanitation are shot -- we won't even have a laundry sink in the basement for a couple of days. Don't take that to heart, Students; I'm still a stickler for cleanliness. Finding spots for dirty dishes until then, and where trash should be located -- all fun challenges.
They've knocked out most of the wall in the old pantry where my "baking nook" will be. Eee! All the cabinets, backsplash tile, and drywall hood-like features are gone. They even let me beat on the old fake "hood" with a sledgehammer!
Light fixtures, gone, save one in the old laundry area.
A channel has been cut in the drywall where new light fixtures will go in.
So, yeah, my world is rocked, but I can see the new bits coming together already. I don't want to spoil any surprises so you'll keep reading; can't reveal too much about what's next.
The fun part was not sleeping all that well from Sunday into Monday, and then, as I was teaching a class today at Truax, an electrician who's been making modifications to the classroom I've been assigned showed up AGAIN and said that this speaker install was the only work he had to do today, could he get in now rather than at 11:00 when we were done. Sigh. Let me see what I can do...found another classroom and we'll take the final exam in that new room tomorrow, stay out of his way. Good thing I'm super-flexible, right?
I complain and kvetch a bit, mostly to aid in storytelling, but I'm trying very much to exercise my gratitude muscle. That drywall dust? It's the fairy-dust of change. Walking barefoot in it is good for me as well as the space (I know, I'm watching for nails and such, I'm cautious).
The guys will be back on Tuesday for yet more demolition, I presume, and I'll keep you posted. Thanks for reading my random ramblings...

This thing actually got us seriously looking at the house; we really thought there'd be a hood over the stove. Bye, old thing...
