What day is it, anyway?
I just got a meme from our good friend Dorothy that read: “Eighth day of self isolation and it’s like Vegas in my house. We’re losing money by the minute, cocktails are acceptable at any hour, and nobody knows what time it is.” Truth.
When we started ripping the wallpaper off the small bathroom’s walls, I honestly had NO idea it could get a little hairy.
The wallpaper and its corresponding goo is off the walls, save for a little bit of cleanup before we spackle and prime. Today, Jim decided the sink needed to come out of there. Great. We work out the mousetrap insanity of the drain mechanism bit, he’s got the valves shut off and the hot and cold disconnected. We open the cooler so the sink can rest in it (yep, the cooler is still upstairs after that last IVE party).
Under normal circumstances, it makes PERFECT SENSE to replace the old shitty water shutoff valves with good ones, with the brass bits inside. Especially since the old cold valve, once it’s shut off, is still leaking. Jim has replaced these kind of valves before with great success on at least two of our other bathrooms at the other house.
He made a trip to Home Depot (we say Despot) to get materials and other supplies for painting later on. Took off old valves, put on new. First, without plumber’s tape. Leaky.
Then, with plumber’s tape. Still leaky.
Now it’s 4:36 and Ace closes at 5. Sent him out post-haste to get some plumber’s putty, because the two nearly full vats of it we had were old and solidified. Why do they sell so much at once??
He came back with a promising pipe joint compound, but it’s still a tiny bit leaky.
Oh, and I forgot to mention that he inadvertently got the wrong kind of valves on his first trip to Ace, too small. Poor guy made three runs to Ace plus the Home Depot run. It’s as if we are trying to get or give the ‘Rona. I apologize. We are not infected and do not wish to be either. Ugh.
It was my bright idea to rip off the wallpaper. I had no idea it would lead to this.
Being completely panicked that we would not have water through the night, in a time when water is just freaking vital to life. I’m a raging idiot.
At this point, the valves are on. The hot water leaks the tiniest bit. But we don’t dare TOUCH any of it until tomorrow when stores open, in case something breaks (God forbid, woman, bite your tongue).
Thank you, Universe, for a 5-gallon bucket to catch the few drips of water till tomorrow. Water, y’all. We are back in business with water.
The rest of the day was pretty mediocre. Walked dogs when the rain let up this morning. While Jim was out on errands, I recorded a couple of videos for my students on Monday. Still need to finish fixing the auto-captions for one of those. Thank GOD for auto-captioning, saves me SO much time.
Other than that, all good on the Pippitt home front. We are lucky, with two sweet dogs and a roof over our heads. And water. We have water.
